Replace Group-Names with Labels in Discussions
Published on
When we talk about real-world groups, names carry enormous emotional and historical weight. The moment a label appears — whether national, cultural, or political — it brings along associations, loyalties, and defenses that can cloud the actual ideas we’re trying to examine.
To make discussions more reflective and less reactive, replace group names with neutral, invented labels without any ordering or associations by any participant.
This simple shift allows us to explore principles — fairness, rights, power, cooperation — without triggering the emotional shortcuts and baggage that real names evoke.
By abstracting away identity, we create space for clearer reasoning, empathy toward all sides, and a focus on structure rather than blame. Once the ideas are clarified at the abstract level, we can carefully map them back to reality — now with greater insight and less polarization.
If you say “America supported Isreal in its war”, it is very emotionally loaded and everyone brings their different prior knowlege, worldview and emotional baggage into the discussion. If we say “Circle suppored Square in its war”, we can discuss about the essence.
